The political cartoon is about the purchase of Alaska. The cartoonists message is that the U.S bought a mass of land full of ice. In the cartoon, it shows a big block of ice that represents Alaska. I can imagine other people saying it was a waste of money. In the background, Russia is walking off with $7.2 million when we walk off with ice. The cartoonist uses labeling and symbolism. The cartoonist labeled the ice as Russian America, or Alaska, and the wheelbarrow treaty as the treaty we used to gain Alaska. Symbolism is used because the cartoon shows Seward and President Johnson walking away with the ice. This cartoon supports those against American imperialism because it shows that the U.S. is buying nothing but ice.
